Equal Opportunity

Position Statements

The American Institute of Architects Washington Council affirms its belief in the human dignity and self-worth of all persons; and calls for fair, impartial, unbiased, and non-prejudicial treatment of all persons in every employment, education, social, and business transaction. Members of the Council are obligated to the National American Institute of Architects’ Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct which in part states: “Members shall not discriminate in their professional activities on the basis of race, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, or sexual orientation.”

The Council strongly supports equality of rights under the law.

The Council further encourages efforts, by the State of Washington and public agencies to include minorities and women, and others from disadvantaged/under-represented cultural and economic backgrounds, to participate in the design and construction process. Encouragement, whether mandatory or voluntary, should include opportunities for employment in architectural offices, consulting to architectural teams, direct contracting of services, and support of educational programs aimed to increase access to the field of architecture for under-represented groups.
