Guiding Principles

The primary goal of AIA Washington Council is to represent the common interests of all of Washington’s architects. The Executive Director, Stan Bowman, is a registered lobbyist maintaining relations with the Governor’s Office, legislators and legislative staff, state agency organizations, consumer groups, and other public bodies.

The Guiding Principles of the Council are:

Architects serve the public health, safety and welfare by designing places for a broad range of human activities, creating environments where individuals and groups may thrive.
The practice of architecture requires special skills and training; a lifelong commitment to learning, professional ethics and service; and a favorable business climate within which to practice.
The process of design achieves a positive balance of natural, social and economic forces, respecting the environment and shaping civilized places.
Architects express their professional concerns and commitments by engaging in public affairs with a range of professional and public allies, with the goal of helping to shape livable communities.

Resource Groups

Mission Statement

It is the mission of AIA Washington Council Resource Groups to be informed of the substantive and political ramifications of the issues each undertakes. With that knowledge, members of the Resource Groups pledge to review legislation dealing with related issues and give immediate feedback to the Council. That feedback can take the form of questions, opinions, or shared experiences. Members need to be willing to work toward consensus on controversial, complex issues. They need, also, to reach out to other AIA members, bringing them into the discussions about issues affecting the practice and the built environment.
